Learning disabilities Irvine, CA

The many faces of learning challenges.

Whats Really Going on When Kids with Average (or Above) IQs Struggle in School and Drive Their Teachers and Parents Crazy?

Regular kids, with average to above average intelligence are sitting in class, day after day, frustrated and misunderstood by their teachers, parents, classmates, and even themselves.
They want to do well in school. They know they should be able to. But somehow, they just cant seem to do it.
Why does it take them so long to finish their work?
Why do they have hours more homework than other kids in their class?
Are they just stupid? Must be, since everyone else seems to be able to do the work more easily.
Surprisingly, these kids exist in every classroom in every school. They might be good at hiding it, but they are suffering nevertheless. Somehow, no matter how good they are at other things, reading or math, or some other aspect of school just isnt working out for them as well as it should.

The 4 Groups of Learning Skills
Easy learning is built upon a continuum of neurodevelopmental learning skills that start with reflexes in utero and continue developing to the highest levels of thinking. We think of that continuum in four basic levels:
Developmental or Core Learning Skills – Learning, or information processing, is actually stimulated by movement. It begins in utero with movements triggered by reflexes. When babies are born, these reflexes begin to go away, or become integrated, as higher levels of thinking begin to take over. Integration happens through trial and error movements and gradually intentional movement. Physical movement and exploration is critical to developing visual skills and becoming internally organized.

People often think of organization in terms of planning and organizing time, projects and materials, but internal organization is needed in order to sit in a chair or walk across a room without bumping into things.
Processing Skills – Processing skills is the second level in the learning skills continuum. These include such skills as memory, attention, visual processing (how we think about information that we can see or imagine), auditory processing (how we think about information that we hear, such as the sounds in words or the tone of voice our friend is using), language processing, and processing speed ( how quickly we can think about and respond to information).

Challenges in any of these areas will cause the learner to have to work longer and harder than they should.
Executive Function Skills – Executive function is like the brains CEO. This is the part of the brain that guides our behavior and attention, that helps us plan and reason and solve problems. Students are notorious for putting long term projects off to the last minute. But the bottom line is it takes a number of sophisticated executive function skills to plan out and execute a project.

If a student looks lazy, unmotivated, or disorganized, the real culprit may weak executive function skills.
Academic Skills or higher learning skills – The highest level on the continuum is academic and higher learning skills. Success in this arena depends upon a solid base of skills in the levels below. People of all ages learn how to compensate for their challenges, but compensating is hard and inefficient. The supporting skills must be in place in order to learn new information easily.
Learning problems are very broad. They look different on different kids, but the thing they have in common is this:
Something is breaking down in their processing of information.
Learning is all about processing incoming information – whether its a toddler picking up a cracker and finding out that it breaks in his hand or a 12th grader doing calculus.
When students that you know are struggling in school, when you are tempted to write it off as lazy, or attention, or immaturity, take a closer look. There are dozens of skills that may not all be working together to make learning easy.
The Good News: All those skills can be taught, built, corrected. There is REAL hope for all those kids.

The Fitness Protocols is a new fitness book written by “longest loser” Epi Torres after losing 70 pounds and keeping the off over nine years. What makes this book unique is that it is based on a balanced approach to lasting weight loss and fitness improvement. The book is not a typical diet or exercise book you find out there. Torres developed a unique system based on his highly unusual and successful accomplishment.

The world’s toughest book critics at Kirkus Indie wrote, “Torres is a convincing authority on exercise and diet—he reduced his waist size by 10 inches and has maintained a 70-pound weight loss for nearly 10 years. In an easy-to-read, conversational tone, the author provides a multitude of statistics and studies that support his approaches to weight loss and fitness.”

This unique fitness book approach is based on four key protocols Torres developed to help you accomplish lasting weight loss and fitness:

Commitment
Preparation
Change
Maintenance

The Commitment Protocol is the first and most critical step in the process.

It will help you ensure your decision to improve your fitness is solid and highly sustainable. Your commitment and determination are critical to your success. The adage “Where there is a will there is an A” is highly applicable here. The stronger your conviction, the higher the probability you will reach your goal and the easier it will seem to get it accomplished.

Once you feel you have reached a strong sense of commitment, you will move on to the Preparation Protocol.

Here we help you get ready to accomplish the necessary changes in your approach to fitness.

When you feel you have mustered enough commitment and are ready to move forward, you will move on to the Change Protocol. Here we will help you implement a new approach to help you succeed.

Finally, you will move on to the fourth and final Maintenance Protocol. Here we help you ensure the new approach sticks and forms into habits. Once it takes hold, the chances of relapse become less and less over time, making it much easier to remain fit for good!

As you can see, this fitness books is not a typical diet and/or exercise book. Torres takes a comprehensive approach based on the key success factors of lasting fitness. Instead of focusing on food or dieting per se, Torres emphasis is on the key factor which if not addressed can lead to failure and frustration so many experience. This is a must read fitness book by anyone who has decided to embark on a weight loss fitness improvement effort.

Article by Jan Camille Canivel

One of the different problems that can cause continuous suffering to people is being disabled because it prevents them from having control of their body movements. In addition, it also prevents them from functioning like a normal person. There are a number of people located in different areas all over United States who are suffering from disability.

In Los Angeles alone, there are a large number people who are suffering from it. The 2000 US Census in California showed that the number of disabled people who are aged five and above already reached around 1,775,000.

Disabled people continuously face problems concerning their physical, emotional and, and financial state. There are different federal laws that were created and implemented to lessen the suffering of disabled people by giving them the rights to be employed or to continue working. One of the laws that were designed to help disabled disabilities is known as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

What is ADA?

ADA is known as a law that was created in order gives protection to employees against discrimination based on disability. Employers are forbidden by ADA to discriminate disabled employees or job applicants in all aspects of employment including promoting, firing, hiring, and pay, among others.

In addition, employees are given protection against retaliation when they impose their rights, which are also provided by the law.

Disability as Defined by ADA

Not ever kind of illness that people may suffer from qualifies as a disability. For the purposes of ADA, disability is a physical or mental impairment that extensively limits a person’s major live activity.

This major life activity is also known as a primary activity that can be done by almost everyone including sleeping, sitting, or standing. If a person’s illness does not significantly limit his/her capability in performing a major life action or activity, it will not count for the disability that is covered by ADA.

In addition, ADA does not provide protection for people who are only suffering from a temporary disability.

Coverage of ADA

The following are the employees who are covered by the protection given by ADA:

* Disabled employees- These are employees who have a physical or mental disability that puts a considerable limit on a major life activity.

* Employees who are considered by their employers as disabled- There are instances wherein employers discriminate their employees based on their belief that they are disabled, even if they are not.

* Employees with an impairment history- Employers are not allowed to take any unpleasant action against their employees due to the former disability of the latter.

However, employers are not required by this law to accommodate disabled people in cases wherein that if they performed that certain act, an undue hardship will be created. This means that accommodation would cause a considerable difficulty or expense to the business. There are specific factors that are considered in determining if the accommodation will make an undue hardship. Some of these factors include the business’ nature, cost and nature of the accommodation, and the employer’s financial resources, among others.

Seeking Assistance from Attorneys

There are skilled Los Angeles attorneys who can help you fight for your rights if you are facing problems as a result of your disability. These experts will help you by using their knowledge regarding all legal aspects concerning the specific law governing your case.

Five points to consider when you want to fit fitness into a hectic life

When I tell people what I do for a living, many will tell me they wish they had the time to exercise, but just cant seem to fit it in. This is one of the biggest excuses people give for not making exercise a part of their life. However, we all have time for the things we feel are important enough. Many people actually have more time than they think. Research now supports breaking increased activity into 10-minute blocks, which anyone can do without even thinking about it.

Do any of these scenarios sound like you?

Lazy is NOT A Diagnosis Part 1
Jill Stowell

I recently sat down with the parents of a high school student who has managed to barely get by in school. When we finished an in depth testing process we discovered he has some serious learning problems.

His parents told me with aching regret, that in the past, they had punished their son and taken things away because they had been told that his poor performance in school was due to ”laziness and a behavior problem.”

Have you ever seen one of these kids that look lazy?

Maybe they always have their head on the desk. Others just never seem to be able to get started. Or maybe they just seem tired all the time, moving slowly, working slowly, barely able to muster any energy until it’s time for recess, P.E., or lunch. When asked about homework, they might say they didn’t have time, or didn’t have the right book, or maybe even say they just didn’t feel like doing it.

When teachers have gone “above and beyond,” done all they can do and the student doesn’t appear to be trying, lazy is often the only obvious conclusion left.

Despite how frustrated teachers get,
What we know about students is that if
they could do the work, they would do it.

Not doing work on a consistent basis is really embarrassing, and no student wants to be embarrassed.

So what is it with these lazy-like kids?

Difficulty with learning usually has its root in one or more areas of inefficient processing or thinking skills, which are interrupting expected academic development.

Believe it or not, the developmental foundation for learning begins in utero.

There is a developmental continuum that depends on each skill/ability building on the group that develops before it. If there is interference in this development, at any level, it can affect school performance.

Often the interrupted skill development is very subtle.

Jessica (a real student but not her real name) is getting Ds and Fs in high school.

She can read, write, spell, and do math, BUT she doesn’t pay attention in class, does poorly on tests, and doesn’t get her work done.

There are no major problems, but she has lots of little challenges
* Her memory is a little bit weak
* Her attention is also a little bit weak so she is easily distracted from any task
* She doesn’t have good strategies for monitoring her attention or for organizing her homework and projects
It’s not an overwhelming disability. She “gets by.” And she seems pretty normal.

Here’s part of the tragedy
She’s pretty sure her parents and teachers are right when they say she’s lazy and unmotivated because she just can’t seem to pay attention and get her work done.

Weak underlying processing and executive function skills can keep capable students from being able to pull it all together to perform as expected. Instead, they struggle to keep up and have inconsistent homework grades and test scores.

And most of the time they themselves don’t even know there’s anything wrong. It’s just how they’ve always been.

Jessica, and students like her, get ignored because they appear to be unwilling to try hard enough to succeed.

The biggest tragedy? Parents, teachers, and other professionals have (and continue) to treat these students as if there is nothing that is needed but effort AND if they really do need more there is nothing that can be done.

Here’s the good news -
These conditions CAN be corrected, fixed, repaired so they no longer get in the way of performance!

In Part 2 we’ll identify the missing / weak skills and how they effect school, work, and the rest of life.

Introduction:
Mental health has become a major international public health concern and the World Health Organization has placed high profile focus on the importance of mental health. Mental health is recognized by the World Health Organization and April 7, 2001 was first devoted for its observance.

It is estimated that 450 million people worldwide are affected by mental, neurological or behavioral illnesses at any given time. Mental illnesses are common to all countries and cause immense suffering. People with these disorders are often subjected to social isolation, poor quality of life and increasing mortality. These disorders are the cause of staggering economic and social costs. Mental illnesses affect and are affected by chronic conditions such as cancer, heart and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Untreated, they bring about unhealthy behavior, non-compliance and prescribed medical regimens, diminished immune functioning, poor prognosis and eventual loss of valuable human potential.

Definition of Mental Health:
Mental health is defined as a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in fruitful activities, gratifying relationships with other people, and also includes the ability to adapt to change and to cope with diversity. Mental health is crucial to personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships and contribution to community or society.

Mental disorders are health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, personality, or behavior, which are associated with distress and/or impaired functioning. Mental illness is a term that is applied collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders.

Types of Mental Health Illnesses:
The difference types of mental illnesses are enumerated in the International Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders published by the World Health Organization.
* Organic mental disorders e.g. Alzheimer’s disease and delirium.
* Mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substances use e.g. alcohol, street drugs and medications.
* Schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders e.g. paranoid schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.
* Mood (affective) disorders e.g. depression and manic depression.
* Neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders e.g. anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
* Behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors e.g. eating disorders and non-organic sleep disorders.
* Disorders of adult personality and behavior e.g. paranoid personality disorder and transsexualism.
* Mental retardation e.g. learning disabilities.
* Disorders of psychological development e.g. specific reading disorders such as dyslexia and childhood autism.
* Behavioral and emotional disorders with onset usually occurring in childhood and adolescent e.g. attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder and conduct disorders.
* Unspecified mental disorders.

Burden of Disability:
Mental disorders generate an immense public health burden of disability. Mental disorders vary in severity and their impact on people’s lives. Mental disorders such as schizophrenia, major depression and manic-depressive or bipolar illness and obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder can be enormously disabling. This burden of disability often is profoundly under recognized in most parts of the world. In the United States, mental illness is on par with heart disease and cancer. Mental disorders occur across the lifespan, affecting persons of all racial and ethnic groups, both genders and all educational and socioeconomic groups.

Mental disorders are not only the cause of limitations of various life activities but also can be a secondary problem among people with other disabilities. Depression and anxiety, for example, are seen more frequently among people with disabilities than those without disabilities.

Socioeconomic Burden of Mental Illness:
In the United States approximately 40 million people aged 18 to 74 years of the population, had a diagnosis of mental disorder alone of a co-occurring mental and addictive disorder in the past year. At least one in five children and adolescents age 9 and 17 years has a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

It is estimated 25 percent of people over 65 years (8.6 million) experience specific mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and dementia that are not part of normal aging. Alzheimer’s disease strikes 8 to 15 percent of people over age 65 years, with the number of cases in the population doubling every 5 years of age after age 60 years. Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be responsible for 60 to 70 percent of all cases of dementia and is one of the leading causes of nursing home placement.

The direct costs of diagnosing and treating mental disorders in the United States totaled approximately $ 69 billion in 1996. Lost productivity and premature death accounted for an additional $ 74.9 billion. The total cost of mental health disorders in England has been estimated at 32 billion. More than a third of this cost is attributed to lost employment and productivity related to schizophrenia, depression, stress and anxiety.

Etiology of Mental Illness:
The etiology of mental illness may be as a consequence of complex neurochemical, anatomical and physiological changes in the brain. Social factors have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of mental illness. Some of the main causes of mental illness are given below:
* Hereditary.
* Environmental contaminants e.g. lead, copper and mercury.
* Other disease such as kidney impairment may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
* Poor nutrition.
* Poor sanitation.
* Homelessness.
* Microbiologically unsafe food.
* HIV infection.
* Poor physical health.
* Psychological stress.
* Posttraumatic stress.
* Brain injury.
* Metabolic disorders e.g. hypothyroidism.

Modern Treatments for Mental Illness:
Treatments for mental illness take many different forms, including medication, psychotherapy, complementary therapies and self help strategies. It is worth bearing in mind that what works for one person may not work for another. Some treatments work best in combination and even the same person may prefer different treatments at different points in his or her life.
* Physical therapies include maintaining the general physical health of the patient, providing psychiatric medication, such as anti-depressants, or administering electroconvulsive therapy.
* Psychological treatments or talking treatments may take many different forms, including counseling and psychotherapy. Psychological therapies usually depend on the person with a mental health problem talking to somebody else, often a trained professional.
* Alternative and complementary therapies offer alternatives, which replace orthodox Western medicine. The term complementary therapy is generally used to indicate therapies which differ from orthodox Western medicine and which may be used to complement, support or sometimes to replace it. Examples include aromatherapy, meditation and yoga.
* Self help strategies serve to alleviate mental health problems, ranging from individual strategies for adapting to day-to-day difficulties and symptoms through to self-help group and support strategies. Examples of self help strategies include: self-management of manic depression, hearing voices strategies, self-harm strategies and self-help groups for depression.
* Social support is not a treatment as such but it can have a beneficial effect at least equivalent to that of other forms of interventions. Social support involves providing practical help around the social dimensions of a patient’s mental health problems. For example by ensuring that the patient is properly housed and receives an adequate weekly income.

Recommendations on Ways to Reduce, Eliminate or Prevent Metal Illness:
* Develop effective mental health poli

When it comes to being an athlete one of the things that you should learn to expect is that you will eventually be injured. Most of the more common injuries that athletes suffer are involved with the lower body, the feet in particular. Whether you are playing basketball, soccer, football or any other sport for that matter your feet are some of the most vulnerable body parts that you have. Keeping your feet in good working condition is one of the most important parts of being a successful athlete.

The best athletes have quick hands and feet, and if your hands or feet are injured they can slow down considerably. If you do by chance retain a foot injury then you can rest assured that the information and products that you will find at Physioroom.com will help greatly with treating any sports related injury that you might suffer.

One of the most common injuries for athletes is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is an injury that is associated with repeated trauma to the heel such as is related to jumping up and down over and over again. While plantar fasciitis might not be a career threatening injury it is one that can be a hindrance when it comes to your performance during the game.

Treating plantar fasciitis can sometimes require surgery, but sometimes can be treated with just a few simple techniques. Relieving the pressure from your plantar fasciitis while you are sleep is a great way to relieve some of the pain that you feel when walking. This is done through the use of specialized socks that help to stretch your foot and relieve the pain. You will also want to make sure that you choose shoes with good arch support so that you are able to walk and function without being affected by the pain too much.

Did you ever take a moment to stop and think why you diet? The word diet invokes pain and sacrifice.

According to the medical dictionary, the word diet is: “A prescribed course of eating and drinking in which the amount and kind of food, as well as the times at which it is to be taken, are regulated for therapeutic purposes.” The word therapeutic has an interesting connotation to it. Would you have thought a diet to be therapeutic; akin to a spa treatment or a special dose of medication? Query: Is dieting a choice or a necessity?

While there are as many reasons for dieting as there are dieters, it takes a certain amount of dedication, fortitude and will power to maintain a diet program. If you were ever on a diet, how did you feel? Were you successful in achieving your desired goal; or are you still struggling with it?

Were you aware that during the 17th and 18th centuries, physicians and patients regulated their food carefully, in order to prevent disease? Did you also know that in 1863, a gentleman by the name of William Banting was one of the first people known to have successfully lost weight by developing a diet by targeting carbohydrates? Sound familiar?

There are many ways in which you can successfully diet using the following techniques: Always be seated at a table when eating. Avoid having dinner in your living room while watching television. Eat only when you’re hungry; three healthy meals a day is the norm. Eat slowly; put down your fork between each bite. Chew your food slowly and methodically; try not to quickly chew and swallow. Never go shopping on an empty stomach; not only will you buy everything in sight, but spend a fortune to boot. If you have a nine-to-five job; bring your lunch and eat outdoors, never in your cubicle.
Exercise whenever possible. If you can walk 20 minutes on your lunch hour; do it. Take a trip to your local park, and walk around the track once or twice. If you have an errand to run, and you can walk instead of drive; do it. If you enjoy music, turn on the stereo in your home and move. On weekends, take your kids bike riding; or spend a day at the park playing touch football.

Whether dieting is a choice or a necessity, the key is not to allow it to take over your life. Just do the best you can, as often as you can. Focusing too much on one thing becomes an obsession; which leads to stress if not perfectly achieved; and eventually puts you in a state of angst. Nothing is worth your mental or emotional health, particularly when it comes to dieting. Perhaps it is a matter of choice.
